So far the BEST pan/mine experience in the area. Source pails are WELL seeded, everyone will come away with something cool. And not tiny little dust nuggets either, actual decent stones. Seems like they employ local college geology students, the staff sat down with kids and adults and walked them through everything that was found. With interesting background/context. At all ages there was something to learn.

Fun place to take the kids gem mining. A teensy bit pricey but the buckets are not salted and were rather large, so I can understand the pricing. We had a terrific experience with the staff taking time to review our treasures and explain what each gem is and how they are commonly used. Very interesting. Be sure to stop in at the coffee shop next door; they had some yummy banana bread for sale.

Was a nice setup with a lot of neat rocks to look at.

Great fun for the family. Professional and honest when it comes to cutting stones--or advising against such. We had some marginal finds that many touristy places would have pushed a cut to make a quick buck. This place would not cut stones unless there was value for the customer. This was a good experience and I cannot wait to get back out to Boone and try again. I would also suggest that you bring finds from elsewhere to this shop as they will give you an honest assessment.

Then we got to the part where we took the rocks inside and he was going to explain them all to us. He was more interested in keeping an eye on the store, and others, rather than focusing on us. It was very frustrating as I choose this place over others in the area because I wanted our kids to learn something... Oh well.

All-in-all was fine.

We went with the biggest bucket so my wife and 2 kids could pan through that.

We took our staff here for a fun team-building activity and had a blast. We went in expecting to have fun but honestly didn't realize quite how much fun it would be! We each got medium buckets and came out with some super cool gems. Everyone who worked there definitely impressed us with their knowledge of the gems and were so patient and thorough explaining all of our finds to us.

We then went up to the Appalachian Fossil Museum and had such an informative and interesting tour. 5 stars for sure!
